Adhesives & Sealants
Optical brighteners improve adhesives – effective tracers in quality assurance
Adhesives are used in various industries. They are indispensable in modern processes. Adhesives are used wherever fast, clean, durable and reliable solutions are required. Adhesives are increasingly conquering the markets where it would have been unthinkable to use them at all. In many areas, adhesives can replace welding, bolting and riveting. A wide range of the glue application techniques have been developed, which takes a great deal of experience, expertise and dexterity.

Optical brighteners are used not only for the optical improvement of products. Their hardly visible fluorescence effect plays a key role, for example, in quality control. A small quantity of optical brighteners can be added to adhesives as an indicator, for example, to check the adhesive distribution in automatic application machines. The quantity to be added depends on the area of application. In addition to the polymer used to prepare the adhesive, the bonding technique must also be taken into account because the optical brightener used must withstand the bonding process and remain effective.
In the automotive industry, adhesives are primarily used for gluing windshields. In electrical engineering, they are used for gluing displays of smartphones and tablets. Here, optical brighteners are indispensable in order to ensure the optimum dosage in the process sequences. Whether hot melt adhesives, technical adhesive tapes, epoxy-based adhesive resin systems, adhesive pastes, hot melts or others: Depending on the final application of adhesives, they must be optimised with optical brighteners.

FAQ
Tracers are substances used for detecting the distribution in a substrate, for example, by means of UV light, and thus serve as “indicators”. Tracers are primarily used, among other things, for the surface leak tests or the detection of defects.
